Her responsibilities have included focusing on supervising our 6-year year-old boy, our 3 year-old girl, and our infant son. Generally, either I or my husband are in the house while Shawna has been here, but she has had plenty of solo time with one, two, or all three kids at various points. I am so grateful that she helped us out for this trip and I love having her with us every day. She has always been willing and happy to assist in whatever way she can. Shawna is warm and engaging with our children. She loves playing games and is so much fun for my children. I can tell that Shawna cares about them and truly enjoys spending time with them. When a child crossed the line, she immediately got down on their level and spoke to them directly, stating their transgression, implementing a consequence where necessary, but always giving them a chance to earn back their privilege and her good favor. One summer, shortly before my son was to leave the school for good and begin kindergarten, I had the pleasure of acting as a chaperone on a class trip. As a parent, the day was a little harrowing and I was slightly overwhelmed, but Shawna was ready. As soon as the children were done eating, she immediately mobilized them into games of Duck Duck Goose and Follow the Leader, changing tactics and using positive distraction at the slightest hint of unrest. I stood back watching with the other teachers, all of us commenting on what a natural she was with the children and how much confidence she had gained over the course of her tenure at the school. That leadership has only improved over the past year as Shawna earned the chance to lead her own pre-K classroom. My 3-year-old daughter has already been counting down the days until she can be in the "big girl classroom with the big kid teacher."
